Data SIMs

What are they?

Data SIMs are a fast growing and sought out product for the telecommunication industry, having the ability to transfer large amounts of data over long distances such as images, video, text and many other forms of data. Another unique feature of the SIMs is they are streamed in real time, giving your business live and extremely accurate data. These operate similar to that of a mobile phone SIM in the fact that information can be both sent and received between two points either manually or autonomously. The most common form of data is Machine to Machine, or as it more commonly known – M2M where information from one machine/location to another automatically.

Who would use Data SIMs?

Given their ability to transfer large volumes of data as well as the wide network range it has, this makes them perfect for tracking assets. An example of this could be a waste disposal company tracking each individual truck on route. This live feed will simultaneously send data back to the head office with details of location, truck weight, fuel left in the tank as well as more useful information. The benefits to this are obvious as informed decisions/corrections can be instantly made (truck 5 is running low on fuel, truck 6 to take over) or strategies modified for future purpose.

Data SIMs are also used in many stationary circumstances like electricity/water readings. The components are commonly referred to as Smart Meters as they can produce a live feed of the households energy/water consumption. This holds benefit to the customer as they can receive accurate readings/bills each month but also holds a significant benefit to the company using them. Smart meters reduce costs on staffing as meter readings do not require a physical person. From a strategic point of view this information is valuable to the company as they can more accurately forecast energy consumption as well as the time of day where the household’s usage peaks and troughs.

How are they charged?

Data SIMs are charged per SIM card and per megabyte of usage. A company transferring small amounts of text between two points will use considerably less than that of one transferring video or images.
