Premium Rate Numbers

What Are Premium Rate Numbers (PRN)?

Premium rate numbers are a form of high cost phone service which is charged to the customer on a per-minute or per-call basis. These are charged at a rate set by the company of an amount between £0.10 and £2.00. Calling from a mobile phone costs considerably more as the network providers add an additional charges, in which case, using voice short codes (VSCs) can be useful. Premium rate numbers can be identified clearly by the prefix as they generally begin either 09 or 070.

These numbers are regulated by the governing body Phone Pay Plus who ensure the distributers of the phone number comply with their policies. It is required by law to always include a price wherever the number is advertised to ensure the caller is fully aware of the charges.

Utilising A PRN

Who Would Use A PRN?

Premium rate numbers are usually the main source of revenue for companies. They are most commonly used for television competitions and in magazines and adult chat lines. Of course, any business which has a service to offer over the phone could use PRNs as they are very versatile in functionality and charges.

Here are some current uses of Premium Numbers:

-          TV talent / voting shows

-          ITV competitions

-          Newspaper horoscopes

-          Adult chat lines

-          Follow Me adverts

-          Betting lines

How Would I Advertise My PRN?

Primarily, premium rate numbers are targeted towards landline callers as using mobile phones can lead to confusing and misleading advertising of the charges and the PRN owner runs the risk of missing out on any extra revenue share. It is for this reason that traditional media (such as TV, newspapers and magazines) would be beneficial as most people are commonly at home, near a landline when viewing the advert.

How Much Revenue Could I Expect To Receive?

The payout to the owner depends on

a)      The charge to the caller

b)      The amount of minutes generated per month on the number

Different volumes and charges will payout higher or lower accordingly.

What Are Your Call Handling Times?

When working in a customer service department which operates remotely, the response times of the telephone calls are the first aspect customers notice. If a customer is kept on hold for a long period of time it’s the first thing they’re going to notice about the company. While it may demonstrate that the company is busy, it also suggests that the company cannot handle the influx of calls they are receiving. Read More
